Introduction to LBWCC's Title III Grant
Lurleen B. Wallace Community College (LBWCC) has been awarded a five-year Development Grant under the Strengthening Institutions Program authorized under Title III, Part A of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended. LBWCC received notice on March 14, 2005, that the college would receive funding under the Strengthening Institutions Program of Title III beginning October 1, 2005. The award for each year of the five-year grant is $365,000, with anticipated total funding of $1,825,000.
Addressing challenges and opportunities facing the recently merged college, the grant is designed to improve accessibility of programs and services, increase enrollment, and improve retention. The distance learning program will be developed for maximum student accessibility and compliance with Section 508 Rehabilitation Act requirements.
To increase enrollment, several high-demand programs and distance, science and networking courses will be developed through the grant. Local employment demand indicates the need for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers and technicians in industrial systems technology.
Retention components planned in the grant include instructor utilization of students' assessed learning styles to incroporate more effective teaching methods, development of an on-line advising program, a student orientation program, and computer and information literacy modules.
